Almost every extension request fails the same way: it arrives late, it explains too much, and it does not propose a new date. Fix those three things and the answer is usually yes.
Ask before the deadline, not after
The difference between “I need two more days” sent on Wednesday for a Friday deadline and the same message sent on Saturday is enormous. The first is planning. The second is a problem someone else now has to absorb. Even a few hours of notice changes how the request reads.
Name the new date yourself
“Could I have a bit more time?” forces the other person to do the work of deciding. “Could I send this Tuesday morning instead?” is a yes or no question, and people answer those faster. Pick a date you are certain of, not the earliest one you might manage.
Keep the reason to one line
One line, no detail. “I have had a family thing this week” or “The data came back later than expected”. Long explanations read as pleading and invite scrutiny of whether the reason is good enough. A short reason is taken at face value.
For a tutor or lecturer
“Hi Dr. Owens, I am working on the comparative essay due Friday and I am not going to have it at the standard I want. Could I submit by Tuesday 12pm instead? I have had two assessments land in the same week. Happy to follow whatever the formal process is if there is one.”
For a manager
Lead with impact rather than apology: “The Q3 deck is going to need until Thursday. The finance numbers arrived yesterday instead of Monday. Nothing downstream is blocked by this — flagging early in case that changes anything for you.”
For a client
Offer something in the gap. “The full build will be ready Thursday rather than Monday. I will send the homepage and nav on Monday so you can start reviewing.” A partial delivery turns a delay into a schedule change.
If you have already missed it
Do not open with the reason. Open with the new date and an acknowledgement: “This is late and I am sorry — you will have it by 2pm today.” Then deliver at 2pm. Nothing repairs a missed deadline like the next one being exact.
