How to Text Someone After Ghosting Them

TextAI Team · · 2 min read

You meant to reply. Then a day became a week, the week made replying feel bigger, and now the unanswered message sits there making it worse every time you see it. Most ghosting is not cruelty. It is avoidance that snowballed.

The good news: a short, honest message almost always lands better than you fear. The person on the other side has usually wondered, shrugged and moved on with their week. You are not walking into a trial.

First, decide why you are texting

  • You want to pick things back up. Then the message needs a light acknowledgement and something to move forward with.
  • You want to close it properly. Then it needs an apology and a clear end, nothing more.
  • You just feel guilty. That is fair, but be careful: a message that reopens things when you do not want them reopened makes it worse.

Own it briefly

The instinct is a long explanation. Resist it. A paragraph of reasons reads like a defence, and it makes the conversation about your week instead of about them. One line is enough:

“Sorry I went quiet, that was on me.”

If there was a real reason, a family thing, a rough patch, a work crunch, you can say it in a few words. You do not need to prove it.

Then give the conversation somewhere to go

If you want to reconnect, follow the apology with something specific and easy to answer. Not “how have you been?”, which is a lot of work to reply to after silence, but a reference to the last thing you talked about.

“Sorry I went quiet, that was on me. Did you end up going to that concert you were deciding about?”

For a friend, add warmth. For a match, a little lightness helps. For a work contact, keep it plain and get to the point.

If you are closing it instead

“Hey, I owe you a reply and an apology for disappearing. I don't think I'm in a place to date right now, and I should have said that instead of going quiet. Sorry, and I hope things are good with you.”

That is honest, it takes responsibility, and it gives them an ending, which is the thing ghosting takes away.

What not to do

  • Don't pretend nothing happened. “Hey stranger!” after a month puts the awkwardness on them.
  • Don't over-apologise. Three messages of sorry make them comfort you.
  • Don't invent a dramatic excuse. It is easy to see through and hard to keep straight.
  • Don't expect a reply. They may not answer, and that is their right. You have done your part.

Finding the words

The hardest part is the first line. TextAI's Ghosting excuse tool writes a believable, non-dramatic message based on how long you have been quiet and who you are texting, and you can regenerate until the tone is right. Apology text is better when you want the message to be mostly an apology, and Write a text helps when you know what you want to say but cannot get it into words.
